A hydrogel injection for knee osteoarthritis
Arthrosamid® is a non-absorbable polyacrylamide hydrogel injected into the knee joint to treat symptoms of osteoarthritis in adults. It becomes incorporated into the joint lining and remains there long term. It is different from a steroid injection and is not a cartilage replacement.
Relief of symptoms
The aim is to improve knee pain and function. Studies have reported improvements, but benefit varies and cannot be guaranteed. A randomised trial found symptom relief comparable to a hyaluronic acid injection over one year. Longer follow-up studies suggest benefits may persist in some patients, although these studies have important limitations and do not establish superiority over other treatment options.
An individual assessment
The diagnosis and severity of arthritis, previous treatment and your priorities all matter. Exercise, medicines, other injections and replacement surgery may also need discussion. Arthrosamid is not intended for a knee that has already been replaced. Tell the clinician about previous knee surgery or injections, infection, allergies and relevant health conditions.
What to discuss before deciding
Pain and swelling can occur after injection, and infection is a possible complication. Because the hydrogel is non-absorbable, its long-term presence should be part of the discussion. Ask about suitability, expected benefit, risks, aftercare, antibiotic precautions, treatment availability and the full cost before proceeding.
